La Cañada Flintridge Turns 50 in a Garden Ten Years Its Senior

October 8, 2026

The Japanese Garden at Descanso covers one acre and opened on June 3, 1966. Volunteers built it with funding from the Japanese American community. Landscape architect Eijiro Nunokawa designed the garden, and Whitney R. Smith designed the teahouse. At that point La Cañada and Flintridge were still two unincorporated communities. They would not vote to become one city for another ten years.

This fall the two dates meet. The city marks 50 years of cityhood, the Japanese Garden marks 60, and Enchanted Forest of Light marks its 10th winter. The city has scheduled one evening for its own celebration. Most of the anniversary calendar from October through early January runs through 1418 Descanso Drive.

Ten Years Before There Was a City

Voters approved cityhood on Nov. 2, 1976. According to the city's own history, incorporation took effect on December 8, 1976, the day Councilman Edmund Krause filed the completion certificate with the County Recorder. The city's Summer 2026 Vista newsletter gives November 30 instead. The City History page is the official account that explains how the date was set, so December 8 is the date to use. The name, as the Chamber of Commerce directory puts it, means "glen between the hills."

Milestone Date How it's marked in 2026
Descanso Japanese Garden opens June 3, 1966 60th anniversary exhibition and Giant Koi at Enchanted
Cityhood election Nov. 2, 1976 "Together for 50 Years" programming
Incorporation takes effect Dec. 8, 1976 No public event announced as of late September
Enchanted Forest of Light 10th season Runs Nov. 22, 2026 to Jan. 9, 2027

That order shapes how the season plays out. The garden's anniversary began in June. The city's main celebration lasts two hours in October. Then the garden closes out the year with Enchanted, the biggest event of its season.

Oct. 22, When the City's Party Opens the Garden Gate

The city's anniversary and Descanso cross paths on one Thursday. On October 22, Descanso is giving La Cañada Flintridge residents free daytime admission from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. You'll need to show proof of residency at Guest Services.

At 5 p.m., when the free admission window ends, the city's 50th Anniversary Celebration begins at Olberz Park and runs until 7. The program includes music, an inflatable obstacle course and songs from members of the LCHS Chamber Singers. A scavenger hunt awards a limited-edition LCF50 picnic blanket.

The day doesn't end there. Carved runs nightly at Descanso from 6 to 10 p.m. through November 1, so the ticketed evening show begins an hour after the park event starts. In one day, a resident can spend the morning in the gardens for free, go to the city's party in the late afternoon and come back to Descanso for the pumpkins after dark.

The Garden's Anniversary Is Already Underway

The Japanese Garden's 60th didn't wait for fall. The anniversary exhibition in the Sturt Haaga Gallery, "Sound of Water: Feminine Expressions of Fluidity," opened June 20 and runs through January 3, 2027. It features six Japanese women artists and was curated by Japanese art historian Meher McArthur. Pasadena Now covered the exhibition when it was announced in May.

The anniversary's biggest single evening has already happened. On September 18, Descanso held an End of Summer celebration for the Japanese Garden, open to members and La Cañada Flintridge residents. The program included koto and ikebana with Saeko Kujiraoka Zirkelbach and Kaz Kitajima, DJ Rosie Yasukochi, readings by Naomi Hirahara, and Kishin Daiko taiko. That same week, Group Yokou showed Sogetsu Ikebana arrangements in the Minka, from September 14 to 20. Both are over. The gallery show is now the main way to see the 60th until Enchanted opens, and it stays up until a week before the light show closes.

October Around the Edges

The days around the anniversary itself fill with events in other parts of town:

  1. Saturday mornings, through October. The La Cañada Farmers Market is at a temporary location, 4526 Rinetti Lane, through the end of the month. The market operator lists a 9 a.m. opening. The state's certified-market list, dated July 1, says 8 a.m. Arriving at 9 works under either schedule.
  2. Sunday, Oct. 18, early. The Pasadena Trail Half & 5K/10K starts at Hahamongna Watershed Park, with race starts between 7:30 and 8:25 a.m. and a post-race festival at 9.
  3. Sunday, Oct. 18, later. Lanterman House holds a Craftsman Week special open house. Its regular Tuesday and Thursday tours continue, and Sunday tours are available by appointment.
  4. Nightly through Nov. 1. At Carved, the pumpkin displays return, with new labyrinth sculptures by Helsinki-based artist Alexander Reichstein. Bobolito's "Rhizome" moves to the Oak Grove.
  5. Saturday, Oct. 31. Descanso adds trick-or-treating, crafts, a miniature pumpkin patch and a dance party in the Oak Grove, all included with Carved admission.

The Oak Grove comes up again below. It hosts installations in both of Descanso's fall shows this year.

The Tenth Winter Carries the Sixtieth

Enchanted Forest of Light runs from November 22, 2026, to January 9, 2027, from 5:30 to 10 p.m. It is closed on Thanksgiving, November 26, and on Christmas Day. A preview party is scheduled for November 21.

Descanso is billing this season as ten years of Enchanted, and the garden's 60th is part of the show. Giant Koi will appear in the Garden of Good Fortune to mark the Japanese Garden's anniversary. A new laser show on the Main Lawn ends with a "snowfall" finale, and Tom Fruin's glowing house sculptures move to the Oak Grove. That puts a Fruin piece in the same grove where Reichstein's and Bobolito's work stood for Carved a few weeks earlier. A Holiday Market selling local crafts runs December 2 through 6 on the lawn.

The city's own December dates are less settled. The Chamber of Commerce says the Festival in Lights at Memorial Park happens on the first Friday in December, when the Miss LCF court is announced. Its 2026 directory calls this year's event the 32nd Festival in Lights. Under that rule the date would be Friday, December 4. As of late September, though, the city's event page still showed last year's December 5 date, marked expired. Treat December 4 as likely, not confirmed. December 8, the anniversary of incorporation, has no public event announced. The city says its anniversary hub will be updated with new programs through the year.

That leaves a holiday market at the garden on December 2 through 6, a likely festival at Memorial Park on December 4 and an anniversary date on December 8 with nothing planned yet. Every Descanso date this season is already published.

What Stays After January

Most of the season ends on January 9. One part of the anniversary is meant to last longer. The city's "50 Trees for 50 Years" initiative calls for planting 50 trees during the anniversary year. Residents can request a tree for the public right-of-way next to their property. The city says the program started at the April 23 Earth & Arbor Day event. The winning design from the city's anniversary logo contest will also appear on official communications and celebration items through the year.

The tree program shares something with the oldest milestone on this calendar. Sixty years ago, a garden on Descanso Drive was planted by volunteers with community money. This year the city is planting street trees one request at a time, and the request form is on the Together for 50 page.
